* Denny’s Christmas Wassail recipe: I looked at several recipes and used them as models for my own. 9 cups of apple juice, 2 1/2 cups of orange juice, 1 cup of pineapple juice, 1/2 cup of lemon juice (helpful to cut through the sweetness a bit); 10 or 12 whole cloves, 4 or 5 cinnamon sticks, 1/4 teaspoon ginger; 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg. Bring to a boil and then turn it down to a low simmer for a half hour or so. After trying it tonight, I’ll try increasing the spices a little and maybe letting it simmer even more. Now here’s the deal, it makes for a very nice wintertime drink but the aroma alone also makes it a very Christmassy atmosphere. And when we serve it to company, we will use the crockpot and let orange slices float on top. One other item…After serving it tonight to Claire and a friend who dropped by unexpectedly, I simply poured the remainder into the empty apple juice bottle. We will thus be able to heat it up a cup or two at a time for several servings.
